About EoE

Children with EoE require careful medical monitoring because symptoms can lead to poor nutrition and growth.

These symptoms include:

  • Frequent stomach aches
  • Feeding problems
  • Nausea
  • Heartburn
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Diminished or no appetite
  • Frequent vomiting

Cause of EoE

Eosinophils are a type of white blood cell that fight disease throughout the body. These are the cells often involved in allergic reactions. In EoE, eosinophils gather in the wall of the esophagus (food pipe) and are believed to cause swelling, discomfort and eating problems.

EoE is thought to be an allergic reaction, like pollen in the air that can cause nasal and sinus allergies in some people. In EoE, the cause of the allergic reaction is believed to be something that is eaten or inhaled.

Through clinical research, we will learn more about what causes EoE, and collect information necessary to bring safe and effective medicines to market that help to treat EoE.
